Today we are looking at the ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 1 tent. This tent may not be too well known in the UK, but is hugely popular in the US and is a great option for solo backpacking and wild camping adventures.
ALPS (Active Lifestyle Products & Services) is a US brand that is well known in the States for making high quality products at an affordable price. It is possible to get your hands on some of their kit in the UK and ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 1 tent is one of those products that can be purchased easily in the UK from stores such as Amazon. Let’s take a look at the spec.
ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 1 tent spec:
Length 7’6” (229cm) x Width 2’8” (81cm) x Height 3’ (91cm)
Vestibule width: 32” (81cm).
Tent area: 20 sq ft (1.86 sq meters)
Vestibule area: 10 sq ft (0.93 sq meters)
This is definitely a solo-use tent, that for most people will be plenty big enough. The decent sized vestibule provides enough space for kit. The length and height of the inner should be big enough for people up to around 6’, possibly taller. Just remember that the walls slope quite steeply, so when you get your sleeping mat in there it will reduce the usable length quite a bit.
4lb 4oz (1.93kg). This is a lightweight tent, but doesn’t make it into the ultralight bracket. However, for many people this will be light enough – especially for short backpacking and wild camping trips.
Outer: 75D 185T polyester
Floor: 75D 185T poly taffeta
Outer: 1500mm HH
Floor: 2000mm HH
Having a waterproof rating of 1500mm HH may not be enough for the UK. If you choose a decent weather window though, 1500mm should be fine. 2000mm for the floor, again, may not be enough for the sodden ground you can sometimes encounter in the UK. Adding a footprint under the tent will protect the tent, give you added waterproofing and for this tent, we’d say it is essential. ALPS do sell a footprint separately, it’s called the ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 1 Tent Floor Saver. It can be purchased from Amazon.
8.5mm 7075 aluminum
Factory-sealed fly and floor seams
3 season. However, given the relatively low waterproof rating it may be best to keep this as a 2 season tent in the UK, again depending on the weather.
6” x 17.5” (15cm x 44cm)
You can see from the ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 1 spec that, for the price, this is a great tent. It does have a couple of compromises and things to consider, but that’s exactly what you’d expect with a tent at this price.
