It’s autumn. Winter is fast approaching. You’re probably already dusting off your insulated sleeping pad and ironing your thermals… ok, perhaps not ironing your thermals, but at least digging them out from the bottom of the drawer. Most serious winter campers have a 4 season sleeping bag for the colder months – a tried and tested way of keeping warm. However, depending on the amount of winter camping you’re planning to do, and the temperature it will likely be, there are other options that will save you a stack of cash and avoid the need to find somewhere to store yet another bulky piece of kit. One option is a sleeping bag liner and today we are going to look specifically at fleece sleeping bag liners.
If you’re only planning a couple of winter camps, or you’re a fair weather winter camper, then it may be worth considering a sleeping bag liner. A sleeping bag liner will not only keep your sleeping bag clean, but it will also serve to add a few degrees to your sleeping bag temperature rating. Fleece sleeping bag liners are budget friendly (cheaper than merino wool liners), warm and lightweight, and give that snuggle feeling that other materials such as cotton and silk don’t – and let’s face it, who doesn’t like to snuggle down into a warm blanket when they’re camping in winter?
We particularly like the idea of using a fleece sleeping bag liner in conjunction with a camping quilt (check out our Camping quilts available in the UK article for a great selection of quilts). Some people don’t like camping quilts because they don’t like laying directly on a sleeping pad which can not only feel unpleasant but can also allow for cold drafts to get at you in the night if it’s chilly. Using a fleece sleeping bag liner will give you something that adds warmth and help stop the cold spots, whilst giving you the ability to adjust your temperature to suit your needs by wrapping up in the quilt, or throwing it over yourself. Anyway, let’s check out the specs of some of the more popular fleece liners out there:
