The best tunnel tent for tall people – the Wechsel Outpost

The Wechsel Outpost is not a tent you’ll see out and about very often in the UK, but it could well be the best tunnel tent for tall people – particularly suited to those who want a tunnel tent that is aimed more at the adventure market, rather than for family camping. Many UK campers may not have even heard of Wechsel. However, perhaps it’s time everyone familiarised themselves with this German brand, as they make some great tents. Their Travel Line series is their lowest priced range aimed at car-camping, campsites and motorbike-camping where weight might not be an issue. Today we are looking at one of their tents that we believe would be perfect for the tallest campers out there – the Wechsel Outpost.

What features should a tall person look for in a tent?

Most tents are not built for tall people – they are designed for average height people. Tall people typically find their feet or head pressed against the end of the tent. That’s really annoying and it can also cause condensation to drip into your inner through the night. Sleeping diagonally helps, but somehow just doesn’t feel right (try sleeping diagonally on your bed at home and you’ll see what we mean).

Tall people should typically look for tents that have a long inner, vertical end walls and height enough to sit up in, and there’s just not many of these around. Tunnel tents tend to have a near vertical wall at the door end, but an often steeply sloping end wall at the foot end. The problem with this is that even if the tent says it is 215cm long, the sloping wall and sagging inner will eat into this, particularly when you’re on your sleeping pad.

So if you’re looking for a tunnel tent suitable for tall people, you need one where the length of the inner is really long, such as in the Wechsel Outpost.

The best tunnel tent for tall people – the Wechsel Outpost – summary

Wechsel Outpost - unique design

We love this tent design. Tunnel tent vestibules are often huge and whilst this seems great for kit and/or for sitting out inclement weather, the whole space is seldom fully utilised. Therefore, sacrificing a bit of vestibule, whilst retaining enough space to sit, cook and store gear, makes a lot of sense. Having an inner tent length of 285cm (290cm for 3 person) is unheard of and should accommodate the very tallest of campers. Plus, if you do happen to need more vestibule space in the day, you can simply unclip the inner and then connect it again when it’s time to hit the hay.  There’s also great head height in the Wechsel Outpost too, adding to the roomy feel.

Whilst the Outpost isn’t the lightest of tents, it is fine to be carried a short distance (especially if there’s a couple of you to split the load).

Another neat little feature is that the end of the porch door can be lifted up and out and supported with poles or sticks to further extend your shelter. A truly versatile tent, that’s great for the price.

In our experience, The Wechsel Travel Line tents are great mid-range tents. They perform well, they’re roomy and well made. If you’re over 6’4″ and struggling to find a tunnel tent that you can truly stretch out in, check out what could well be the best tunnel tent for tall people – the Wechsel Outpost.
